Morning Coffee

written by Susannah Stewart - published on August 11, 2024

No matter where we are, at camp or at home, our morning cup of coffee is very important to us. It's a moment to savour, a time to relax, feel calm in your natural environment, and get ready for the day.

Bean-to-cup, pour-over coffee is the Snow Peak way of being able to enjoy delicious, barista-style coffee while we are outdoors. Taking time to grind the beans, watch the coffee drip into the cup are all part of the process that truly adds to the experience.

Here's our step-by-step guide to how we make it:

What you need

- Classic Kettle 1.8L or Field Barista Kettle

- Field Barista Coffee Grinder

- Field Barista Coffee Dripper - or you can use the lightweight Collapsible Coffee Dripper which is great for travelling

- Coffee Filter Papers

- Your favourite Snow Peak mug. A Titanium Double Wall 450 Mug works well and its vaccuum insulation will keep your coffee warm

Method:

Put your kettle on the Fire & Grill and start to heat up your water.

To brew, we recommend 25-30 grams of the whole beans of your favourite coffee for one cup and 50-60 grams for two cups.

As a quick measure you can fill two Measuring Spoons or one Mini Backpackers Cup with whole beans.  Alternatively, one full hopper of whole-bean coffee in the Field Barista Coffee Grinder equals about 30g. Double it for two cups.

While your water boils, grind your beans in the Field Barista Coffee Grinder to fine granules.

Put together the Field Barista Coffee Dripper and balance it on centrally on top of your cup so it can't tip up. Insert a Coffee filter paper inside. Pour your ground coffee inside the filter paper.

Once your water is hot, you can begin to brew, ideally just before a rolling boil.  Before you start, rinse the filter with a bit of water.

For the first pour, you want to thoroughly saturate the grounds and bloom the coffee.

Next, in a circular motion, pour water approximately halfway to the top of the dripper. For the final pour, using the same circular motion, pour water about two-thirds of the way full and allow it to drip through fully.

To make two cups, double the amount of water in each step. You can also use the dripper over the Field Barista Kettle to make sharing easy.

Then, fill your mugs and savour each sip!
